Kanawha Clergy Crisis Response Team To: All Clergy Last May the Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center facilitated the formation of Clergy Response Teams to be ready in the event a crisis would occur in the nature of the Columbine disaster. We are grateful for the response of the clergy to this cooperative effort. There are several development related to these teams we wish to share with you. In one of our recent meetings, each team selected a convener to represent the teams in planning and to mobilize them as necessary. The conveners have met twice and have put together the following items: 1) The issue of identification and certification was discussed and it was decided to have a full day workshop in crisis chaplaincy. Those who take this training will receive an Id to use in a crisis where we respond. 2) April 1, 2000 8:30-3:30 p.m. is the time and Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center, 16 Broad Street, Charleston, is the place. 3) First Presbyterian Church is conducting a conference on Peaceworks the same day and they have invited us to work with them. We believe this is a positive connection. 4) This full day workshop is open to all pastoral persons who serve on a Church/Synagogue staff. A letter from the congregation attesting to this is required. 5) There will be a $5 registration fee to help defray mailing and the Id. Peaceworks will order a box lunch for those who desire, for a cost of $6. You can bring your own lunch if you prefer. Please call the Counseling Center to confirm your reservation for the workshop, and either send or bring the letter from your congregation. Our phone number is 304-346-9689. Or reply by email to web@kpcc.comWe look forward to hearing from you. Rev. Charles Hendricks, KPCC

Mr. Walton was very open to discuss the Clergy Crisis Response Team project. He first mentioned his concern that we contact the Jewish Rabbi and the Islamic Imam. Charles Hendricks assured him we were not excluding and would be sure they were invited. The Pastors attending were: Rev. Rich Mahan, St. Timothy Lutheran, Sr. Marlene Rust, Christ The King Catholic Church, and Richard Lamb and Rev. Charles Hendricks from KPCC. The issues raised that were of note were: They saw the chaplains as a buffer with community need for a organizational arrangement to contact in case of need. Mr. Walton said he would supply the chaplains with a South Charleston High School I.D. badge. This is a good idea. He said a brochure about the project would help. Mr. Walton said he would give chaplains all the visibility they want or need. Mr. Douglas suggested the chaplains be used to give a thought for the day over the T.V. at school Sissonsville High School August 11, 1999 The team met with Principal Mr. Forest Mann and his Vice Principal Jim Casdorph. They gave antidotes about minor crises in the school and would not rule out a major incident. Sissonville has Crisis Intervention Teams and will be glad to have the clergy help. Mr. Mann said he has read that a high percentage of high school students have anxiety about returning to school. He is going to have a couple of Clinical Psychologists meet with the Crisis Teams in the school to help recognize troubled students. Mr. Mann will provide a Photo I.D. for the Clergy. He also gave an open door for visibility. Mr. Mann suggested several things such as have the Clergy meet with his Crisis Teams. Rev. Jones and Rev. Charles Hendricks attended. Rev. Jones is going to get me the name of other area Clergy. I will write them about Sept. 13. Mr. Mann wants to meet with the Clergy, Monday October 11, 9 A.M. and introduce them to his whole staff. That will be a Faculty Development day. Riverside High School August 9, 1999 Ms. Paula Potter was in Huntington for a meeting. We would like to have I.D. tags!School will introduce the chaplains where possible. Ways to be visible: meet buses, lunch, go to proms, graduation, ball games, assemblies, and plays. Offered school for possible training events. One thought was expressed about dropping the word "disaster" in I.D. Good interaction about the overall concept. In attendance were: Rev. J.D. Smith, Rev. Stan Holmes, Rev. Jon Villers, Rev. Ben Myers, Sr. Clara Lill, Rev. Bernard Toppings, and Rev. Charles Hendricks. George Washington High School August 11, 1999 We had a meeting with the school principal Mr. Lohan. Mr. Lohan found the clergy very helpful after the 1991 Senior Skip Day Shootings. Mr. Lohan saw the team being helpful in two ways: He gave us his personal hot line number and we arranged an emergency phone tree. He also wanted the team to be introduced to parents and students at the following events. August 30, at 7:00 p.m.- Parent Involvement Council (60 Parents) Those in attendance were Rev. H. Knute Jacobson, Fr. Edward Sadie, Rev. David Cutlip, Rev. Mark Lampley, Rev. Skye Alison, Mr. Tim Tucker, Rev. Sky Kershner. Capital High School August, 10, 1999 We are invited by Mr. Giles to come to the school at any time, including Activity Day (every Wed.) Activity groups include SAVE (Students Against a Violent Environment) every Wed. mid morning 75 min. We are invited to be introduced to the students on August 25, 9:00 a.m. at the Student Orientation Assembly. Those attending were Rev. Fredric Villinger, Rev. Bruce Purnell, Ms. Frankie Mc Cain, Rev. Jane Gibbons, Rev. Sky Kershner, Rev. J.D. Smith, Mr. Giles, Assistant Principal. St. Albans High School August 12-13, 1999 Alva "Butch" Anderson, principal of St. Albans High School invited KPCC and pastoral representatives to attend the Training Program for a potential crisis. St. Albans has an administrative team in place to help in a crisis, but the administration was highly positive to the presence of clergy of the community helping when called upon. The training session was directed by the Friends Society. It was a two day training experience that was very profitable. Those who attended were Rev. Bill Hoyle, Rev. Loretta Isaiah, and Rev. Charles Hendricks. Herbert Hoover High School August 23, 1999 Mr. Pete Kelly, Assistant Principal at HH thought the Team could be helpful in several ways: with rumor control (they have had several bomb threats); with communications (they only have two phone lines), and support in a crisis. We discussed having a phone tree to deal with emergencies, that parents could call designated churches for School information in an emergency. Participation with the Student Advisory Committee and the Student Health Advisory Board is also possible. Present were Rev. Jim Robinson, Rev. Mark Pyles, Rev. Dave Mossman, Rev. Bobby Sizemore, and Rev. Sky Kershner .School Meetings Set Initial Organizational Meeting set for May 24, 1999 The shocking events that unfolded recently in Littleton, Colorado have caused many of us to consider what we would or could do if such a tragedy happened in our area. We have asked ourselves this question at Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center. We have been in conversation with Bill Mullett, the Lead Counselor of Kanawha County Schools. He has asked us to organize, train, mobilize, and coordinate Kanawha County clergy for an emergency like the one at Columbine High School. . Our initial meeting, on May 24, will have the following agenda:
Further meetings will occur on the dates below and will provide training in the ideas and skills of disaster, critical incident, Post-Traumatic Stress reaction interventions, risk assessment, impact and crisis counseling. Working together on these skills will help us to be more effective as quick response chaplaincy team. Currently, all meetings are planed for Monday evenings, 7-9 pm.
If you want to be part of this essential resource to our churches and community, please RSVP to Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center, 346-9689.
