Psycho-Theological Issues in Counseling

Course: Coun 620-603 Workshops on Psycho-Theo Issues Summer Semester 1999

Purpose

The Purpose of the class is to provide student with the opportunity to think theologically about psychological issues in life. Much of the class will be interactive, and will involve a high degree of sharing and spontaneous interaction. Therefore, pre-class preparation as described below is essential. Concrete demonstration of completed reading and written assignments will be expected at the start of each class. Those who have not completed Pre-Class Assignments will be expected to withdraw.

 

Rationale:

This course is a three part workshop with an interactional format that requires the student to do pre-workshop readings. It will deal with some material available in the area of Psycho-Theo issues with an emphasis upon the students ability to enter into discussion with others about these issues.

 

Competencies:

The ability to capture the Psycho-Theo themes of the authors in the texts.
Develop skills to be used in Counseling in religious settings.
Set forth an integrated viewpoint of subjects such as: theodicy, sin, forgiveness, and other issues of ultimate concern.

Course Outline


Weekend Unit One: The Nature of Humans, the Nature of God/s

Pre-Class Reading: Kushner, How Good Do I Have to Be ?
                             plus handouts TBA (Campbell on Myth, theologizing as story)

Pre-Class Prep: 

A.    Collect and type or copy 4 one to two page myths or stories
         that speaks to you about the Nature of Men and Women
                1. a story/myth from
ones own religious tradition
                2. a story or myth from a different religious tradition
                3. a contemporary or nontraditional story
                4. a story from personal experience

B.    Collect and type or copy 4 one to two page myths or stories
                that speak to you about the Nature of God/s
                using the same guidelines as above

Post Class Assignment:

        A   5-10 page Integration Paper on your experience of the class
        due two weeks after the first week end.

Weekend Unit Two: the Nature of Sin/Disease/Suffering, Nature of Healing/Redemption

Pre-Class Reading: Kushner, When Bad Things Happen to Good People

Pre- Class Prep: Use the same outline as in Unit One
            A.    4 stories on The Nature of Sin/Disease/Suffering
            B.    4 stories on the Nature of Redemption

Post Class Assignment:Same as in Unit One

Weekend Unit Three: The Nature of Faith, the Nature of Grace

Pre-Class reading: Merle Jordan, Taking on the Gods

Pre-Class Prep: Using the same outline as in Unit One
            A.    4 stories on The Nature of Faith
            B.    4 Stories on the Nature of Grace
